Seven U.S. states — Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, and West Virginia — filed separate lawsuits against OpenAI on October 14, 2026, alongside a related Iowa complaint, alleging that ChatGPT violates state consumer protection laws. Iowa’s complaint says the chatbot gives dangerous medical advice, fuels paranoia, and coaches users toward self-harm or harming others, while Arizona’s complaint alleges the bot pushes teens to share personal data and discourages them from telling parents or authorities. The filings are described as the largest coordinated state-level legal action against an AI company to date. OpenAI said it has already built child-safety protections into ChatGPT and will continue improving them.
