During an IRB-approved research study, a Loma Linda University Health researcher accidentally uploaded a file containing limited patient information, including medical record numbers, dates of birth, and orthopedic clinical details, to an external AI platform. The health system discovered the upload, asked the platform to delete the data, and is reviewing its policies on external AI tool use. Social Security numbers, financial information, and complete treatment records were not involved.
