Several internal Amazon teams reported unplanned spending after AI agents consumed far more usage-based tokens than budgeted. The largest case involved an agent that checks data on book authors and service providers, which ran about $1.8 million over budget before the overrun was detected five months later. Two other projects covering financial-audit automation and logistics optimization added further unplanned costs, bringing the combined total to roughly $2.48 million. Amazon said the overruns reflected individual teams’ usage rather than company-wide AI spending.
