Nine current and former students, including student journalists, artists, and photographers, sued the Lawrence, Kansas school board, district, and an assistant principal in federal court, alleging that the district’s use of the AI-powered monitoring tool Gaggle to scan students’ school Google accounts violated their Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and First Amendment rights to free expression. Plaintiffs say Gaggle flagged and removed student journalism and artwork. The district has since stopped using Gaggle but replaced it with a similar AI monitoring tool; the lawsuit, later amended to add state open-records claims, remains pending.
