The Dutch Data Protection Authority fined Uber B.V. and Uber Technologies Inc. €824,990,000 (approximately $890 million) for violating GDPR’s ban on fully automated decisions with significant effects on individuals. The regulator found Uber’s systems temporarily suspended driver accounts over suspected fraud and automatically deactivated accounts, sometimes permanently, over low customer ratings, without any human review. The case stemmed from a 2020 complaint filed by a French driver-rights group on behalf of more than 170 drivers; Uber says it will appeal, calling the fine disproportionate.
